Disaster Relief and Preparedness

Shanghai Branch pays great attention to the programs of disaster relief and preparedne -ss, and played an important role on major disaster relief operations such as the Yangzi River Flood in 1998, the SARS epidemic in 2003, the Tsunami of Indian Ocean in 2004, the Snow Storm in Sothern China in 2008, 5.12 We chuan Earthquake in 2008 and “Morak Typhoon” in 2009. The relief capability has been improved in recent years. In the past decade, Shanghai Red Cross has raised donations in cash and kind accounting for 2 billion RMB which has been earmarked to built 110 infrastructure facilities in schools, hospitals, stations for disease control and prevention in disaster prone areas and to aid the residents suffered from Typhoon, fire or flood in the city. The Red Cross Disaster Relief and Preparedness Centre was built in 1997, which covers an area of 14,600㎡ with 5,800㎡ warehouse space.
