The Donation of Bone Marrow, Cadaver and Blood

Shanghai Branch has been recruiting voluntary stem cell donors by establishing the first China (Shanghai) Data Base for Bone Marrow Donor Program since 1992. The first stem cell transplantation provided by Shanghai Data Base was done successfully in Huashan Hospital, Fudan University. By the end of 2009, donors’ information stored in the Data Base has reached to 100,000. Over 150 cases of screened blood have been provided to patients in other provinces, Macau SAR, Taiwan region and Korea. In recent years, around 20 cases of stem cell transplantation were carried on an average per year. The donor numbers and recipients from Shanghai Branch ranked on the top in China.

The program of voluntary cadaver donation was listed into “The By-law of Shanghai Red Cross” in June 1995. “ The Regulation on Cadaver Donation in Shanghai” as the first of its kind in local legislative rule was effective on March 1, 2001. Therefore, Shanghai Red Cross designated March 1st every year as a day of commemoration for cadaver donation. By the end of 2009, cadaver donor registration, including cornea donation, have reached to 28,000, among whom, 5,000 donors have already fulfilled their will. Furthermore, the first monument and memorial hall for cadaver donors were set up at Fush ouyuan Cemetery by Shanghai Branch.

Shanghai Branch implements the dissemination and promotion of non-remunerative blood donation, and blood donors’ awards. The component blood donation has been encouraged among the stem cell donors since 2009.
