In 1996, Shanghai Branch initialed the Medical MutualAid Foundation for Hospitalized Children in collaboration with Shanghai Municipal Education Commission and Shanghai Municipal Health Bureau, which was the first in China to effectively aid the children suffering with catastrophic diseases. The foundation covers proportionally of their medical expenditurefor children aged from 0-18 in the city. In 2009, 1.9 million children participated in the program in the city. The Foundation paid 900 million RMB for nearly 1 million beneficiaries, whichhas become the supplementary component to the urban resident basicmedical securitysystem in Shanghai.

Trusted by the municipal government, Shanghai Branch has taken the responsibility inanaging the basic medical security for children in Shanghai.
